Meet Derek Leung, DDS, MSD, FRCD(C)
Being an orthodontist means being able to impact people’s lives in a positive way, while hearing people’s stories, sharing laughs, and learning about their lives. I love witnessing the changes in people, from visit-to-visit, as they see the change in their appearance. Their self-esteem blossoms and they feel and act happier. The day when treatment is finished, and a person sees their new smile, is the best: they can’t stop staring in the mirror and beaming at all they’ve accomplished!
I was raised in Scarborough and had very crooked teeth when I was young, which made me very self-conscious. My own orthodontic treatment was an amazing experience, as I went from never showing my teeth to laughing as hard as I could, carefree and without worry! I decided, then and there, that being an orthodontist was right for me!
I attended Western University, where I completed my Bachelor degree in Health Science. Next came my Doctorate of Dental Surgery, through Western University Schulich School of Dentistry, and a General Practice Residency Certificate from the University of British Columbia. Moving south to the University of Colorado, I completed my orthodontic training, Specialty Certificate, and Master of Science degree. I have practiced orthodontics for about ten years.
Throughout the year I participate in numerous continuing educational opportunities. The practice of orthodontics is constantly advancing and by staying current on new developments I am able to provide better clinical outcomes and patient experiences. In addition to taking courses in Invisalign® and participating in Invisalign study groups, I complete sessions through our practice, where we bring in guest speakers on various topics.
Family is my priority when I’m not spending time with patients. My wife Tiffany and I have a young daughter and another child on the way. I also enjoy being with our extended family and friends, love being outdoors, like catching movies, and, of course, rooting for the Raptors!
